Build a BSI 200-1 aligned ISMS with less manual effort

BSI 200-1 is the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) standard that describes how to establish and run an information security management system (ISMS). It covers management responsibilities, resources, staff involvement, the security process and the security concept. It is the first of the BSI 200 series and underpins the IT-Grundschutz methodology described in BSI Standard 200-2.

Is BSI 200-1 right for your organisation?

BSI 200-1 is used mainly by German federal and public bodies, operators of critical services and companies that supply them, as well as any organisation adopting IT-Grundschutz. It becomes relevant when you need an ISMS that matches German public sector expectations or when you plan an ISO 27001 certification based on IT-Grundschutz.

Adopting it is voluntary, though customers and auditors often expect it.

    How we help

    OneClickComply makes it simple

BSI 200-1 is mapped in OneClickComply's control library and is available on request. Its ISMS requirements are linked to the same controls you use for ISO 27001, so policies, risk records and evidence collected once count towards both. Automated evidence collection, AutoComplete policies and continuous monitoring support the plan, implement, review and improve cycle the standard describes.

    Requirements covered

Eleven chapters, with the core ISMS requirements in chapters 4 to 9 covering management principles, resources, employees, the security process, the security concept and certification.

    Already working towards another framework?

Evidence you collect once counts towards every framework it applies to.

    Manual BSI 200-1 vs. OneClickComply

    Manual BSI 200-1

    • Losing track of reviews and improvements between audit cycles
    With OneClickComply
    • Requirements mapped to controls with clear owners and status
    • Policies generated from your real systems, ready to review and approve
    • Evidence collected automatically from connected tools

    BSI 200-1 FAQs

    What is BSI Standard 200-1?

BSI Standard 200-1 is the German Federal Office for Information Security's standard for information security management systems. It explains which tasks management must take on, how to plan, implement, maintain and improve the security process, and how to create a security concept. Published in 2017, it replaced BSI Standard 100-1 and forms the management foundation of the IT-Grundschutz methodology.

    Is BSI 200-1 mandatory?

BSI 200-1 is not a law, so for most organisations it is voluntary. In practice, German federal bodies are expected to follow IT-Grundschutz, and public sector clients or critical infrastructure customers may require suppliers to follow it by contract. Organisations outside Germany usually adopt it only when German customers or regulators ask for it.

How does BSI 200-1 relate to ISO 27001?

BSI 200-1 is compatible with ISO/IEC 27001 and covers the same ISMS topics, such as management commitment, resources, risk decisions, review and continual improvement. The BSI offers an ISO 27001 certification based on IT-Grundschutz, where the IT-Grundschutz Compendium serves as the audit catalogue. An ISMS built to BSI 200-1 therefore supports, but does not replace, ISO 27001 certification.

Can you get certified against BSI 200-1?

There is no standalone BSI 200-1 certificate. Chapter 9 of the standard points to ISO 27001 certification based on IT-Grundschutz, issued by the BSI after an audit by an external auditor certified by the BSI. The auditor produces an audit report and the BSI certification body decides whether to issue the certificate.

What are the other BSI 200 standards?

BSI 200-1 sits within a series. BSI Standard 200-2 describes the IT-Grundschutz methodology for building an ISMS in practice, BSI Standard 200-3 covers risk analysis based on IT-Grundschutz, and BSI Standard 200-4 covers business continuity management. The IT-Grundschutz Compendium then sets out concrete requirements for specific systems and processes.

What does management have to do under BSI 200-1?

Under BSI 200-1, top management keeps overall responsibility for information security. It must set a security strategy and objectives, decide how risks are handled, assign responsibilities, provide sufficient resources, integrate security into processes and projects, review performance regularly and act as a role model. The operational work is usually delegated to an information security officer.

How long does it take to implement BSI 200-1?

The time needed depends on the size of the organisation, its scope and how mature its existing processes are. The standard itself recommends starting with realistic objectives, often in selected areas first, and then improving step by step. Organisations that already run an ISO 27001 ISMS can usually reuse much of their existing work.

    Does OneClickComply support BSI 200-1?

Yes, on request. BSI 200-1 is mapped in OneClickComply's control library and is available on request rather than as a standard live framework. Because it is mapped to the same controls as ISO 27001, evidence, policies and risk records you already maintain can count towards it. OneClickComply does not issue certificates.
