Build an ISO 27701 privacy management system with less effort
ISO 27701 is the international standard that sets requirements for a privacy information management system (PIMS), the framework an organisation uses to govern how it collects, uses and protects personal data. The 2025 edition, published by ISO and IEC in October 2025, is a standalone management system standard, so it can now be certified without an ISO 27001 information security management system underneath it. It combines management system clauses with Annex A controls for PII controllers, PII processors and supporting information security.
Is ISO 27701 right for your organisation?
ISO 27701 suits any organisation that handles personal data as a controller, a processor or both, and especially SaaS, cloud, HR, health and marketing technology providers whose customers ask for proof of privacy maturity. It is voluntary, but it is often requested in enterprise procurement and supplier due diligence, and it helps show accountability under laws such as the UK GDPR and EU GDPR. Organisations certified to the 2019 edition need to plan their move to the 2025 edition.
Adopting it is voluntary, though customers and auditors often expect it.

OneClickComply makes it simple
ISO 27701:2025 is mapped in OneClickComply's control library and is available on request, so you can work towards it using the same controls, policies and evidence you already hold for ISO 27001, GDPR or SOC 2. OneClickComply generates privacy policies from your real environment, collects evidence automatically from connected tools and keeps your risk register, vendor risk and Statement of Applicability work in one place. Our in-house audit team can guide you through the privacy risk assessment and Annex A choices before you engage a certification body.
Requirements covered
Management system requirements in clauses 4 to 10, plus 78 Annex A controls split into Table A.1 for PII controllers (31), Table A.2 for PII processors (18) and Table A.3 information security controls for both (29).
Manual ISO 27701 vs. OneClickComply
- Re-mapping every 2019 control to the new Annex A tables in spreadsheets
- Writing a full set of privacy policies and procedures from blank templates
- Chasing screenshots and exports from each system before every audit
- Keeping privacy risk assessments separate from, yet consistent with, security risk work
- Losing track of processors, sub-processors and their contractual privacy obligations
- Controls mapped once in OneClickComply so evidence counts towards ISO 27701 and related frameworks
- Audit-ready privacy policies generated from your actual tools and data flows
- Evidence collected automatically and monitored continuously, with alerts when controls drift
- One risk register covering privacy risks to individuals and information security risks
- Vendor risk management and a trust centre that keep processor oversight in one place

ISO 27701 FAQs
What is ISO 27701:2025?
ISO 27701:2025 is the international standard for a privacy information management system (PIMS). Published by ISO and IEC in October 2025, it sets requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving how an organisation manages personal data as a PII controller or processor. Unlike the 2019 edition, it is a standalone management system standard with its own clauses 4 to 10 and 78 Annex A controls.
What changed from ISO 27701:2019 to ISO 27701:2025?
The main change is that ISO 27701 is now standalone. The 2019 edition was an extension to ISO 27001 and ISO 27002, so certification required an ISMS. The 2025 edition follows the harmonised structure used by other ISO management system standards and moves its controls into Annex A: 31 controller controls, 18 processor controls and 29 information security controls, with implementation guidance in a separate annex.
Do I still need ISO 27001 to get ISO 27701 certified?
No, not under the 2025 edition. ISO 27701:2025 can be certified on its own because it includes its own management system requirements and a set of information security controls in Annex A Table A.3. Many organisations still combine it with ISO 27001, because the two standards share the same structure and much of the same evidence, which keeps audits and documentation efficient.
Is ISO 27701 mandatory?
No. ISO 27701 is a voluntary international standard and no law requires it. It is commonly requested by enterprise customers and in supplier due diligence, and it helps an organisation show it manages personal data accountably. Certification does not by itself prove compliance with the UK GDPR, EU GDPR or other privacy laws, but it provides a structured way to meet many of their expectations.
How does ISO 27701 relate to GDPR?
ISO 27701 supports GDPR compliance but does not replace it. GDPR is law, while ISO 27701 is a voluntary management system standard. The 2025 edition includes an informative annex mapping its controls to GDPR articles, so organisations can reuse the same privacy controls and evidence for both. It covers areas such as lawful basis, records of processing, data subject rights, processor contracts and privacy risk assessment.
What is the difference between Annex A Tables A.1, A.2 and A.3?
Table A.1 contains 31 controls for PII controllers, the organisations that decide why and how personal data is processed. Table A.2 contains 18 controls for PII processors, which act on a controller's instructions. Table A.3 contains 29 information security controls that apply to both. An organisation selects the tables and controls relevant to its role and records its choices in a Statement of Applicability.
How long does ISO 27701 certification take?
It depends on scope, existing maturity and whether you already hold ISO 27001. An organisation with a working ISMS can usually reuse much of its documentation, risk process and evidence, which shortens the effort. Certification itself follows the usual two-stage audit by an accredited certification body, followed by surveillance audits during the certificate cycle. Starting with a gap assessment against the 2025 clauses gives the clearest timeline.
Does OneClickComply support ISO 27701:2025?
Yes, on request. ISO 27701:2025 is mapped in OneClickComply's control library and available on request, rather than switched on by default. Once enabled, you can reuse controls and evidence from ISO 27001, GDPR or SOC 2, generate privacy policies, collect evidence automatically and get guidance from our in-house audit team. Certification is issued by an independent accredited certification body, not by OneClickComply.
