    Who needs ATT&CK

Is ATT&CK right for your organisation?

Version 16, released on 31 October 2024, describes Enterprise attacker behaviour as 14 tactics (the attacker's goals) and 203 techniques with 453 sub-techniques (how they achieve them). Teams use it to test detection coverage, prioritise controls and speak a common language about threats.

No law or certification requires ATT&CK, but it is widely used by security operations centres, threat intelligence teams, detection engineers, penetration testers and red teams. Organisations adopt it when they want to show which known attack techniques their controls address, plan detection coverage, or answer customer and insurer questions about threat-informed defence.

Adopting it is voluntary, though customers and auditors often expect it.

    How we help

    How OneClickComply helps with ATT&CK

OneClickComply supports MITRE ATT&CK v16 today, so the controls you already run for frameworks like ISO 27001 or SOC 2 can be linked to the ATT&CK techniques they help mitigate. Automated evidence collection and continuous monitoring show whether those controls are working, and our in-house audit team can help you interpret coverage gaps.

    Requirements covered

    Enterprise ATT&CK v16 has 14 tactics, 203 techniques and 453 sub-techniques, supported by 44 mitigations and 37 data sources.

    Why automate

    Manual ATT&CK compliance vs OneClickComply

    Doing it manually

    • Cross-referencing hundreds of techniques and sub-techniques against your controls in spreadsheets
    • Losing track of which mappings changed when MITRE publishes a new ATT&CK version
    • No reliable way to prove that the controls you mapped are actually configured and working
    • Duplicating evidence for ATT&CK coverage and for each compliance framework you hold
    • Struggling to explain technical coverage gaps to leadership, customers or insurers

    With OneClickComply

    • Controls linked to the ATT&CK techniques they help mitigate
    • A maintained mapping, so you are not rebuilding cross-references by hand
    • Automated evidence and continuous monitoring showing that mapped controls are in place
    • One set of controls and evidence counting towards ATT&CK and your compliance frameworks
    • Clear coverage views and expert support from our in-house audit team to explain gaps
    Capabilities

    Everything you need for ATT&CK

    • Your existing controls mapped to the ATT&CK v16 techniques they help mitigate

    • Evidence collected once and reused across ATT&CK, ISO 27001, SOC 2 and more

    • Continuous monitoring that alerts you when a control protecting against a technique drifts

    • OneClickFix for supported misconfigurations that leave attack paths open

    • Penetration testing to validate defences against real attacker techniques

    • Risk register entries linked to the threats and techniques that matter to you

    How it works

    Three steps to ATT&CK compliance

    1. Connect and scan

Connect your cloud, identity and SaaS tools. OneClickComply checks them against ATT&CK and shows which controls pass and which fail.

    2. Fix and generate

OneClickFix fixes supported misconfigurations automatically, and AutoComplete drafts ATT&CK policies from your real environment.

    3. Monitor and evidence

Continuous monitoring flags drift as it happens, and our in-house audit team is on hand when you need expert guidance.

    What is MITRE ATT&CK?

MITRE ATT&CK is a free, globally accessible knowledge base of adversary tactics and techniques based on real-world observations. It is maintained by MITRE, a US not-for-profit organisation. Tactics describe what an attacker is trying to achieve, such as initial access or exfiltration, while techniques and sub-techniques describe how they do it. Security teams use it as a common language for threats, detections and defensive controls.

    What changed in ATT&CK v16?

ATT&CK v16 was released on 31 October 2024. Its biggest structural change was to cloud platforms: the Azure AD, Office 365 and Google Workspace platforms were removed from Enterprise ATT&CK and replaced by the broader Identity Provider and Office Suite platforms. The release also expanded detection notes and analytics. Enterprise v16 contains 14 tactics, 203 techniques, 453 sub-techniques and 44 mitigations.

    Is MITRE ATT&CK mandatory?

No. MITRE ATT&CK is a voluntary framework and there are no penalties for not using it. It is not a law, regulation or certifiable standard. However, customers, cyber insurers and security assessors increasingly ask organisations how their defences map to known attacker techniques, and ATT&CK is the most common reference for answering that question.

Can you be certified against MITRE ATT&CK?

No. There is no ATT&CK certification for organisations and MITRE does not audit companies against it. Instead, organisations use ATT&CK to measure detection and prevention coverage, plan red team and penetration testing exercises, and prioritise controls. If you need a certificate to show customers, pair ATT&CK with a certifiable standard such as ISO 27001 or an attestation such as SOC 2.

How does MITRE ATT&CK relate to ISO 27001 and SOC 2?

They complement each other. ISO 27001 and SOC 2 define the controls and management system an organisation should operate, while ATT&CK describes the attacker behaviour those controls should defend against. Mapping your ISO 27001 or SOC 2 controls to ATT&CK techniques shows which threats you already address and where gaps remain, helping you prioritise improvements with a threat-informed view.

What are the 14 Enterprise ATT&CK tactics?

In v16, the 14 Enterprise tactics are Reconnaissance, Resource Development, Initial Access, Execution, Persistence, Privilege Escalation, Defense Evasion, Credential Access, Discovery, Lateral Movement, Collection, Command and Control, Exfiltration and Impact. Each tactic groups the techniques attackers use to reach that goal, and each has an identifier beginning with TA, such as TA0001 for Initial Access.

Is ATT&CK v16 the latest version?

No. MITRE typically publishes major ATT&CK releases twice a year, and several versions have followed v16. Later releases have restructured parts of the framework, for example v19 split the Defense Evasion tactic into new tactics. Many tools and control mappings still reference v16, so it remains a common baseline, but check MITRE's updates page for the current version.

    Does OneClickComply support MITRE ATT&CK?

Yes. OneClickComply supports MITRE ATT&CK v16 today, linking ATT&CK techniques to the controls you already operate. Evidence you collect for frameworks such as ISO 27001 or SOC 2 counts towards your ATT&CK coverage view, and continuous monitoring shows whether those controls keep working.
