Prepare for GovRAMP High with evidence collected once, continuously

GovRAMP High is the highest of GovRAMP's three security impact levels (Low, Moderate and High) for cloud products sold to US state and local government. Its control set is based on the FedRAMP Rev. 5 High baseline, drawn from NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5. It is intended for products whose data, if compromised, would have a severe effect on a government's operations, assets or people.

Is GovRAMP High right for your organisation?

GovRAMP High applies to cloud service providers whose product is categorised as High impact using GovRAMP's Data Classification Tool (GR-199), which takes the highest rating across confidentiality, integrity and availability. It usually becomes necessary when a state agency, local government or public education body names GovRAMP High in a solicitation or contract for systems holding its most sensitive data.

It is usually required by customers, partners or schemes rather than by law.

    How we help

    OneClickComply makes it simple

GovRAMP High is mapped in OneClickComply's control library and available on request, so your NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 based controls can be tracked against the High impact level alongside FedRAMP, ISO 27001 or SOC 2. OneClickComply collects evidence automatically from your cloud, identity and device tools, generates policies from your real environment and monitors controls continuously, giving your 3PAO and the GovRAMP PMO a well-organised package to review.

    Requirements covered

The High impact level uses the FedRAMP Rev. 5 High control baseline, organised into 18 NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 control families, with GovRAMP-defined parameters and additional requirements.

    Already working towards another framework?

    • ISO 270018% of GovRAMP High overlaps
    • SOC 251% of GovRAMP High overlaps
    • NIST CSF34% of GovRAMP High overlaps

    GovRAMP High FAQs

    What is GovRAMP High?

GovRAMP High is the most stringent of GovRAMP's three impact levels, Low, Moderate and High. It applies to cloud products whose compromise would have a severe impact on a US state or local government. Its controls are based on the FedRAMP Rev. 5 High baseline, drawn from NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5, with GovRAMP-defined parameters and additional requirements.

How do I know if my product needs GovRAMP High rather than Moderate?

Your impact level is set by the data your product handles. GovRAMP's Data Classification Tool, the GR-199 worksheet, helps you identify information types and rate the impact of a loss of confidentiality, integrity or availability. The overall level is the highest of those three ratings. In practice, the government buyer usually states the required impact level in its solicitation or contract.

    Is GovRAMP High mandatory?

GovRAMP High is not a law. It becomes a requirement when a participating state, local government or public education body makes it a condition of procurement or contract for a cloud product handling high-impact data. Without the required status, a provider may be unable to bid for or keep that contract.

    How is GovRAMP High assessed?

A GovRAMP High status is assessed by an approved Third Party Assessment Organization (3PAO). For Ready, the 3PAO produces a Readiness Assessment Report against minimum mandatory requirements. For Authorized, it produces a Security Assessment Report covering the required controls plus penetration testing. The GovRAMP PMO then validates the package, and Authorized status needs approval from a sponsoring body.

How does GovRAMP High relate to FedRAMP High?

GovRAMP High is based on the FedRAMP Rev. 5 High control baseline, so the two share the same NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 foundation. GovRAMP serves state and local government rather than federal agencies and sets its own parameters and processes. GovRAMP publishes a Federal Overlay to help providers align GovRAMP impact levels with FedRAMP Rev. 5 and reduce duplicated work.

How does GovRAMP High relate to ISO 27001 and SOC 2?

ISO 27001 and SOC 2 do not replace GovRAMP High, but much of the work overlaps. Access control, logging, incident response, change management and risk assessment controls appear in all three. A provider with ISO 27001 or SOC 2 in place has a head start, though GovRAMP High is more prescriptive and requires a 3PAO assessment against NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 controls.

What are the ongoing requirements after achieving GovRAMP High?

A GovRAMP verified status lasts 12 months and is extended through an annual assessment with an approved 3PAO. In between, providers must submit monthly and quarterly continuous monitoring reports to the GovRAMP PMO and remediate POA&M items within set timelines: 30 days for high-risk items, 90 days for moderate and 180 days for low.

    Does OneClickComply support GovRAMP High?

GovRAMP High is mapped in OneClickComply's control library and available on request; it is not yet a live, self-service framework. OneClickComply can help you prepare by collecting evidence automatically, generating policies and monitoring controls continuously. OneClickComply does not issue GovRAMP statuses: these come from a GovRAMP 3PAO assessment, PMO validation and, for Authorized, a sponsoring body.
