Prepare for ISO 42001 AI governance certification with confidence
ISO 42001 (ISO/IEC 42001:2023) is the international standard that sets requirements for an artificial intelligence management system, the policies, processes and controls an organisation uses to develop, provide or use AI responsibly.
- Issued by
- ISO and IEC, developed by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 (Artificial intelligence)
- Published
- 18 December 2023 (first edition)
- Latest version
- ISO/IEC 42001:2023
- Type
- Voluntary, certifiable management system standard
Is ISO 42001 right for your organisation?
Published in December 2023, it follows the same management system structure as ISO 27001 and adds AI risk assessment, AI system impact assessment and 38 Annex A controls. Organisations can be certified against it by an accredited certification body.
ISO 42001 is voluntary, but it is increasingly requested by enterprise and public sector buyers who want assurance that suppliers govern AI responsibly. It suits AI product companies, SaaS providers adding AI features and any organisation using AI in decisions that affect people. It is a natural next step for organisations that already hold ISO 27001.
Adopting it is voluntary, though customers and auditors often expect it.
How OneClickComply helps with ISO 42001
OneClickComply supports ISO 42001 today, so its clauses and Annex A controls link to the same controls you use for ISO 27001 and other frameworks. Evidence collected once from your connected tools counts towards every standard it applies to, while the risk register, vendor risk management and AutoComplete policies support your AI risk, supplier and policy requirements. Our in-house audit team and Ask an Auditor help you interpret the standard before your certification audit.
Requirements covered
Mandatory requirements in clauses 4 to 10, plus 38 Annex A reference controls across nine control objectives (A.2 to A.10), selected through a Statement of Applicability.
Manual ISO 42001 compliance vs OneClickComply
Doing it manually
- Building an AI management system from scratch alongside existing ISO 27001 work
- Tracking AI risks and impact assessments in disconnected spreadsheets
- Writing AI policies and lifecycle procedures that do not reflect how teams actually work
- Chasing AI suppliers and model providers for assurance information by email
- Collecting the same evidence twice for ISO 42001 and other frameworks
With OneClickComply
- One set of controls mapped across ISO 42001 and ISO 27001, so shared work is done once
- AI risks and treatments held in a single risk register with clear owners
- Policies generated from your real environment, ready to review and approve
- Supplier assessments managed in one place with vendor risk management
- Evidence collected once from connected tools and counted towards every standard it applies to

What is ISO 42001?
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the international standard for an artificial intelligence management system (AIMS). Published by ISO and IEC in December 2023, it sets requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving how an organisation governs AI. It covers AI risk assessment, AI system impact assessment, lifecycle controls, data quality and supplier relationships, and it is the first AI management system standard that organisations can be certified against by an independent certification body.
Is ISO 42001 mandatory?
No. ISO 42001 is a voluntary standard, and no law requires certification in itself. Organisations adopt it because customers, investors and procurement teams increasingly ask for evidence of responsible AI governance. It can also help organisations show how they manage AI risk when preparing for AI regulation such as the EU AI Act, although certification does not by itself demonstrate legal compliance with any regulation.
Who needs ISO 42001 certification?
ISO 42001 suits any organisation that develops, provides or uses AI systems, whatever its size or sector. It is most valuable for AI product companies, SaaS providers embedding AI features and businesses selling to enterprise or public sector buyers who ask about AI governance in due diligence. Organisations that already hold ISO 27001 often add ISO 42001 because both follow the same management system structure.
What are the ISO 42001 Annex A controls?
Annex A of ISO 42001 contains 38 reference controls grouped under nine control objectives, numbered A.2 to A.10. They cover AI policies, internal organisation, resources for AI systems, impact assessment, the AI system life cycle, data for AI systems, information for interested parties, use of AI systems, and third-party and customer relationships. Organisations select the applicable controls through a Statement of Applicability, and Annex B gives implementation guidance for each one.
How does ISO 42001 relate to ISO 27001?
ISO 42001 and ISO 27001 share the same harmonised management system structure, with matching clauses 4 to 10 for context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. ISO 27001 protects information security, while ISO 42001 governs how AI systems are developed and used responsibly. Organisations can run both as one integrated management system, reusing their risk process, document control, internal audit and management review.
How do you get ISO 42001 certified?
You get ISO 42001 certified by implementing an AI management system that meets clauses 4 to 10, completing AI risk and impact assessments, producing a Statement of Applicability for the Annex A controls, and running an internal audit and management review. An accredited certification body then performs a two-stage external audit. Certificates are typically valid for three years, with surveillance audits in between.
How long does ISO 42001 implementation take?
ISO 42001 implementation time depends on how many AI systems are in scope, how mature your existing governance is, and whether you already run an ISO management system such as ISO 27001. Organisations with an existing management system can reuse much of their documentation, risk process and audit cycle, which shortens the work considerably. The certification audit itself is scheduled with your chosen certification body.
Does OneClickComply support ISO 42001?
Yes. OneClickComply supports ISO 42001 today. Its requirements are linked to the same controls used for frameworks such as ISO 27001, so evidence you already collect can count towards your AI management system. OneClickComply does not issue certificates: certification comes from an independent certification body.
